Multifrequency emission of Mrk 501

Multifrequency spectrum of Mrk 501. From radio frequencies up to very high energy gamma rays.

The sources of the emission. The emission from the radio to UV range is produced by extended jet, in the IR and optical range the emission is dominated by the host galaxy, the x-rays and gamma rays are produced by a compact jet's components - blobs (for more details see Katarzynski et al. A&A 2001).

Cross section of Active Galactic Nucleus. Source of the high energy emission, a blob is created by collision of two or more jet's components. Particles inside the jet are accelerated efficiently a the front of the shock wave that is created during the collision.

The synchrotron process. The first peak in the spectrum, from the UV range to the MeV energies is produced by the synchrotron emission of a blob.

The Compton scattering. The second peak, from the MeV energies up to the TeV range is produced by inverse-Compton scattering of the synchrotron radiation field inside the blob.
